After-School Recreation for Children.

End every school day with Haida Gwaii recreation! We provide programming for all children in our community so that their time after-school can be spent developing life skills. We provide an environment where all-kids belong and can explore, learn and have fun together.

Our After-School Programs help develop Haida Gwaii youth through a variety of educational activities. All programs are free and include a healthy snack for participants. Please complete the general registration and waiver form below for each child if you have not done so already. To register for a specific program, please contact ASSAI Coordinator Mariel McLeod at afterschool@hgrec.com or 902-483-4992 and identify which program and location you wish to register for.

ASSAI | SEIDO KARATE | gr 4-7

SEIDO KARATE Seido seeks to develop in each student a 'non-quitting' spirit. No matter what the obstacle or difficulty -- emotional, physical, financial -- we want students to feel empowered to overcome any challenge. This modern interpretation of the samurai's bushido spirit is what the sincere practice of karate can develop in an individual regardless of age, ability or background. Our inclusive mission allows for drill modifications and other considerations for body safety, so anyone who wants to train can participate while still being challenged. Classes will include a combination of: -Practical Self Defence -Formal Karate Skills -Karate & Seido History -Games! Port Clements Theatre Sports Players will learn games, practice their comedic timing as well as build other skills that will have them ready to confidently perform and interact with a live audience. Aspects of this program include: games & activities for team building, compassionate listening including body language & social cues, vocalization & expression, scene building, improvisation, as well as staging, blocking, & stage fighting. Get rolling with the Gwaii Rollergirls! In this program, students will strap on safety gear and skates and get moving on the John Lalonde Roller Rink in Masset! Skate, stop, spin: all girls ages 10-16 welcome! No experience necessary! Please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable, close fitting clothing (padding goes over top), and don’t forget your positive attitude! Future artists and designers! Release your inner creativity as we delve into the playful world of Wearable Art. Utilizing every day found objects and a lot of glue, tape and paint we will go through the process of creating hilarious and unusual jewelry, beads, wigs, hats, costumes, skirts and more. Throughout the course we will learn about patterns, textures, mixed media and new multimedia ideas that are used in the world of high fashion. Bring yourself, a sense of humour, willingness to play, and your own unique creativity. At the end of the course there will be an opportunity to model and/or show off your creations at the first ever Port Clements Fashion show! A stimulating experience that will open the horizons, the body and the spirit! This program mixes body and artistic creativity. Starting by exploring yoga through story, song and art, participants will be guided through poses and actions that promote mindfulness and creativity. Art projects will reflect our yoga learning and songs will be another way of exploring yogic principles of compassion, strength and love. This program will involve a mix of outdoor play and nature crafts. Students will get to explore outside in search of materials to use in creating art.
