After-School Recreation for Children.

End every school day with Haida Gwaii recreation! We provide programming for all children in our community so that their time after-school can be spent developing life skills. We provide an environment where all-kids belong and can explore, learn and have fun together.

Discover our variety of enriching after-school programs.

Our After-School Programs help develop Haida Gwaii youth through a variety of educational activities. All programs are free and include a healthy snack for participants. Please complete the general registration and waiver form below for each child if you have not done so already. To register for a specific program, please contact ASSAI Coordinator Mariel McLeod at afterschool@hgrec.com or 902-483-4992 and identify which program and location you wish to register for.

ASSAI/JR. ROLLERGIRLS-AGES 10-16

April 10 @ 3:00 pm - May 29 @ 5:00 pm

Get rolling with the Masset Rollergirls! In this program, students will strap on safety gear and skates and get moving on the John Lalonde Roller Rink! Skate, stop, spin: all girls ages 10-16 welcome! No experience necessary!

ASSAI/COOKING – Grades 5-7

April 10 @ 3:30 pm - May 29 @ 5:00 pm

Come learn cooking skills and get creative coming up with recipe ideas! Students get to explore the kitchen at GKNSS and learn everything from measuring to spice mixing, including safety tips and ways to eat healthy. Think of your favourite foods and get inspired - this program is all about fun in the kitchen!

ASSAI/Bubbles N’ Fun – Grades K-5

April 11 @ 3:00 pm - May 30 @ 5:00 pm

Students will explore giant bubbles, juggling scarves, whirling hula hoops and more! This program combines performance arts with fundamental movement skills and is a sure fire way to have some FUN!

ASSAI/Masset Horse Play

April 11 @ 3:00 pm - May 30 @ 4:30 pm

Not only will participants get the chance improve their self-confidence with horses but they will also get a chance to develop physical literacy with a variety of obstacle courses, and games all while enjoying the magic of horses. This slight variation on Horse Club will let kids be more active with horse themed games and stengthening exercises while working on ground work with the horses.

ASSAI/Port Kids Horse Club-Grades K-7

April 12 @ 3:00 pm - May 31 @ 4:30 pm

The Port Kids Horse Club is a continuation of last years horse program, but don't worry if you're new and would like to join we'll be happy to have you! This year we'll be focusing on developing our skills as riders and drivers, that's right this year Cyndi is going to hand the reins over to the students and let them steer themselves through obstacle courses, and arena games to help the participants gain greater self-confidence and team building skills through horse play.

ASSAI/ARTS AND OUTSIDE FOR GRADES K-3

April 12 @ 3:00 pm - May 31 @ 4:30 pm

This program will involve a mix of outdoor play and nature crafts. Students will get to explore outside in search of materials to use in creating art. The instructors will lead participants in games and in making unique environmentally themed arts and crafts. Come with weather appropriate clothing, boots, and creativity!

ASSAI/Multi Sport-Grades 3-7

April 13 @ 3:00 pm - June 1 @ 4:30 pm

In this program, students will explore the rules and movements of various sports and games, meanwhile developing their strength, balance, and aerobic fitness. This is a great opportunity for students to try new sports and get active with friends!

ASSAI/Circus Skills -Grades K-7

April 13 @ 3:00 pm - June 1 @ 4:30 pm

Performance and Play
This unique program combines physical activity and coordination with creativity. Participants will spin, juggle, jump, tumble and balance while also developing skills in showmanship, acting, basic costuming and designing of
simple circus props. All youth attending will be encouraged to work at their own pace in a supportive, non-competitive environment – what’s more fun than the circus!? All fitness levels and abilities are welcome.
