HG Rec Summer Day Camps

HG Rec has a 40+ year history of providing affordable & engaging day camps to local youth ages 5 – 12 years! Our camps will have max. 20 registrants per week. We will be outside as much as possible! Activities will be designed in a way that if camp participants need to miss a day or two of programming due to illness or we need to go to summer camp-at-home, we can merge seamlessly into package delivery/virtual options for them and/or reimburse. We will combine themed camp activities with healthy snacks & workshops from local instructors (Camp Specialists). NEW in 2022 – we are committed to reducing our consumption & making our programming more climate-change & environmentally friendly, with curriculum in respect and reciprocity for persons, animals & place included!

*We do not provide lunch. Please make sure your child/ren come prepared with food + reusable water bottle.

What to Expect at Camp this Summer

Let’s get outside this summer and embark on scavenger hunts, play in the sand, run relays together,  visit community gardens, explore the intertidal, celebrate with a end-of-week celebration, and more! Open to ages 5 to 12 years on Haida Gwaii.

Camps will run for 2 weeks in Daajing Giids Llnagaay – Queen Charlotte, Gaw Tlagée – Masset, Gamadiis Llnagaay – Port Clements, and K’il Kun Llnagaay – Sandspit. We have limited space (max. 20 participants per week) and will keep a waitlist.

We have two themes for camps this year :

We are designing camps to accommodate kids having to stay home due to illness or adjustments to delivery-only or virtual camp options. In 2020, we offered package delivery with our Summer Camp-At-Home with activities, instructions, and healthy snacks. In 2021, we successfully launched an in-person program with no issues, but still maintain contingencies. If participants need to stay home due to illness, activities from camp will be available for parents/guardians to pick-up. If public health orders shift and in-person camps are no longer permitted, our contingency plan is to have activities and/or virtual program delivery to our registrants.

SAMPLE WEEKLY ITINERARY: 

The deadline for registration is 4:00PM PDT the Friday before camp or when camp registration is full. Drop-in will be available ONLY if there is space (maximum registration is not met). 

Our staff will do our best to accommodate all ages and abilities in our programs. Once we’re aware of ages and skill levels of registrants, we will adjust programming to meet the needs. Families can work with us to hire a support worker so their child/ren can attend. If you have special requests, please e-mail the coordinator directly at coordinator@hgrec.com well in advance or call 250-637-1192 and we’ll do our best to help accommodate!

  • K’il Kun Llnagaay – Sandspit: Sandspit Community Hall

*We will be using outdoor spaces in communities for programming, including fields, playgrounds, in-town beaches, community gardens, golf courses, etc. Please ensure your child/ren are prepared with proper footwear and attire. We will provide parents/guardians with a camp itinerary on the first day of camp with a list of items to pack each day as a reminder.

  • Week One: July 4 – July 8, 2022
  • Week Two: July 11 – July 15, 2022

Gaw Tlagée – Masset

  • Week One: July 18 – July 22, 2022
  • Week Two: July 25 – July 29, 2022

Gamadiis Llnagaay – Port Clements 

  • Week One: August 2 – 5, 2022
  • Week Two: August 8 – 12, 2022

K’il Kun Llnagaay – Sandspit*

  • Week One: August 15 – 19, 2022
  • Week Two: August 22 – 26, 2022

*Vaccine clinics scheduled for community halls may impede program delivery on the dates above. Camp dates may need to be adjusted to accommodate. We are booked at the Sandspit Community Hall for the last week of August as a contingency (August 23 – 27), as camps may need to be pushed to a later week. We will advise parents/guardians of any changes.

WAITLIST: To be placed on a waitlist, please e-mail registration details (name of child/ren, age(s), community) to info@hgrec.com.

COVID-19 SAFETY PLAN: The COVID-19 Safety Plan will be on-site and sent it to all registrants, as well as posted on our website (www.hgrec.com/covid-19/).

CANCELLATION POLICY: Full refund with 7 days advance notice or if absence due to illness. For children unable to attend due to illness, a package will still be available for parents/guardians to pick-up at the camp or we will provide refund if notice given directly to the Rec Coordinator. Please do not bring your child/ren to camp if you or someone in the household shows signs of illness. Pre-screening will be done daily.
