CANADIAN FIREARMS SAFETY COURSE (PAL) & CORE Courses – Summer/Fall 2022

We have found a new instructor to deliver the firearm safety PAL & hunter education CORE courses locally and are gauging interest in 1-day PAL (8hrs) and 1-day CORE (10hrs) delivery across Haida Gwaii for August, September and into fall/winter.
  • The Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) is the primary licence for possession of a firearm and acquisition of ammunition, and it is both required and the only permissible document for an individual to acquire or permanently import a firearm.
  • The Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) program is British Columbia’s hunter education program. The B.C. Wildlife Federation (BCWF) operates the CORE Program on behalf of the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations.
Dates and venues will need to be planned in advance; however, there is flexibility to deliver in all island communities. HG Rec is keen to work with organizations in the community to schedule PAL courses in accordance with academic calendars, hunting season, workshops, and more. The youngest age that can do the PAL course is 12 years and CORE is 10 years. The instructor has delivered the course to local youth, is very open to accommodating youth with varying needs (they just need to be made privy to any supports that may be necessary) and is keen to support lessons in schools and youth centres with advance notice, and targeting a specific age group (16 years) can be done year over year as part of curriculum. These accredited courses should be eligible for Short Term Continuing Education grant funding through Gwaii Trust Society, eligible residents defined as having lived on Haida Gwaii for at minimum 24 months consecutive, and may be a leverage for applying for funds for your students or community youth. If you’re wishing to confirm these details, please reach out to Gwaii Trust directly.
If there is a collective interested in offering this at low-cost to island youth, then we may be able to collaborate on a youth grant in the future or leverage funding in other ways. As always, subsidies or discounts is at the forefront; we want to keep these certificates as accessible as possible to those who need it. The first step in firearm safety is education!
The course delivery can be a full weekend day or weekday for either the PAL or CORE. It could be delivered over the course of multiple evenings as required, too. For those who attain BCWF materials for CORE, there will also be an opportunity to study on your own time and challenge the CORE locally when the instructor is here. Do note, the max allowable in a PAL course is 12 participants, CORE is unlimited.
At this time, we’re interested in knowing if there is community interest & preferences for August & September dates for PAL and/or CORE courses. This will be on a first-come first-served basis. We will also take requests for courses into the new year and come up with a schedule for supporting the instructor in delivery and ensure residents have the license they need to for hunting for the season. We are working on pricing and will follow up on individual cost for the course shortly.
