 SUMMER DAY CAMP 2021 – Sandspit – REGISTRATION OPEN!

PLEASE READ BEFORE REGISTERING YOUR CHILD/REN: 

Haida Gwaii Recreation is excited to bring back our Summer Day Camps for their 41st year! These camps offer a full week of fun activities for your child/ren and this year we’re getting outside, physically distancing as much as we can, building relationships among our youth, creating opportunities for mentorship, practicing good hand hygiene, and enjoying healthy snacks with the help of the Local Foods to School program!

This year’s capacity for camps is limited to 12-14 attendees/week due to COVID-19 restrictions. You CAN sign your child/ren up for both weeks of camp; however, if demand for our camps is too high, we MAY need to rescind your registration for ONE of the weeks. We may be able to offer attendance in another adjacent community. We are doing our best to accommodate the needs of all families, essential workers, etc. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Please select the preferred week of camp during registration. If registration is full (no tickets available online), to place your child/ren on a waitlist e-mail info@hgrec.com. Due to the high demand for our camps, cancellations without 72hr notice will NOT be refunded, unless the absence is due to COVID-19 illness or isolation. 

WHAT TO EXPECT AT CAMPS THIS SUMMER

Let’s get outside this summer and embark on a dragon-egg scavenger hunts, run relays where we jump through rings of fire and cross moats into castles, launch water balloons in catapults, visit (fairy) community gardens, explore the intertidal, celebrate with a beach-themed balloon drop at the end of camp, and more! Open to ages 5 to 12 years on Haida Gwaii.

We’re doing things differently due to COVID-19 to ensure the safety of all registrants while ensuring a fun and engaging program for all! This includes physical distancing, getting outside as much as possible, frequent hand-washing, and regular cleaning of high-touch surfaces. Please be aware that enforcing physical distancing among children is tough; to mitigate risk and encourage play, we will reduce the number of children in each program and emphasize hand hygiene. We have adapted activities to emphasize physical distancing and allow for most of these activities to take place outdoors. However, it is vital that children be permitted to play and there may be some shared use of equipment (e.g. playgrounds) and some games may involve some level of interaction (e.g. capture the flag). We will post details of our COVID-19 Program Safety Plan for each camp on this page and www.hgrec.com/covid-19 once finalized. In accordance with public health recommendations,  we recommend that anyone who is at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19 does not attend programming at this time. We will do our best to implement our COVID-19 Safety Plan, but the risk remains that a COVID-19 outbreak could occur despite our best efforts!

Camps will run for 2 weeks in Queen Charlotte, Masset, Port Clements, and Sandspit. We have limited space (max. 12 participants per week) and will keep a waitlist.

We have two themes for camps this year:

  • Dragons & Fairies (Week 1)
  • Ocean Adventure (Week 2)

We are designing camps to accommodate kids having to stay home due to illness or adjustments to delivery-only or virtual camp options. Last year we offered package delivery with our Summer Camp-At-Home with activities, instructions, and healthy snacks. If participants need to stay home due to illness, activities from camp will be available same-day for parents/guardians to pick up for their child/ren.

SAMPLE ITINERARY: 

8:30 – 9:00AM – Set-up, the arrival of kids

9:00AM – 9:30AM  – Group welcome & check-ins, 15 minutes of yoga/stretch & small snacks available

9:30AM – 10:30AM – Activity #1: Emphasis on movement and team-building (e.g. scavenger hunt)

10:30AM – 11:00AM – Transition: Snack & free art time/outdoor play, hand-hygiene

10:45AM – 12:00PM – Activity #2: Arts project and/or Camp Specialist (e.g. Clay Dish-Making with Amber Faktor)

12:00PM – 12:40PM – Lunch Time, hand hygiene

12:40PM – 2:15PM – Activity #3: Adventure (get outside!) and/or Camp Specialist (e.g. interpretive nature walk)

 2:15PM – 2:45PM – Transition: Snack & free art time/outdoor play, hand-hygiene

2:45 – 3:30PM – Activity #4: Themed activity (e.g. Ocean Science)

3:30PM – 4:00PM – Clean-up, parents/guardians pick-up

Our staff will do our best to accommodate all ages and abilities in our programs. Once we’re aware of the ages and skill levels of registrants, we will adjust programming to meet the needs!

** We have the week of Aug 23 – 27 booked in Sandspit as well, should we need to move any camps due to vaccination clinics. We will provide ample notice of any changes.

COST:

  • $100/child – 5-day week

TIME(S):

  • 9:00 AM Drop-off/Camp Start (camp staff arrive at 8:30AM)
  • 3:30 PM Pick-up/Camp End (camp staff leave at 4:30PM)

Lunch is NOT provided. Two snacks per day are provided with support from the Local Food 2 School program. If your child/ren has any allergies or preferences, please indicate them during registration.

COVID-19 SAFETY PLAN: COMING SOON!

CANCELLATION POLICY: Full refund with 7 days advance notice or if absent due to illness. Please keep your child/ren home if they or anyone else in the household exhibits any flu-like symptoms. If youth and/or someone in the household has traveled outside of Canada in the last 14 days or is told to isolate by the health authority, they are not permitted to attend. These conditions may change at any time to reflect evolving public health orders. Sorry, no drop-ins or partial registrations (e.g. select days) permitted. 

HOW TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD

In addition to completing registration & payment online, parents/guardians must read & sign the waiver forms and COVID-19 Assumption of Risk & Permission Form HERE: https://waiver.smartwaiver.com/v/hgrec/.

We will send parents/guardians a reminder to complete this waiver prior to camps if you have not done so by end of June. Your child/ren must have a form completed prior to entry on the first day of camp. Failure to provide this documentation will mean your child/ren will not be able to attend our camps, so please contact us if you have any issues completing the form.
