SUMMER DAY CAMP 2022 – K’il Kun/Sandspit
PLEASE READ BEFORE REGISTERING YOUR CHILD/REN:
Haida Gwaii Recreation is excited to bring back our Summer Day Camps for their 42nd year! These camps offer a full week of fun activities for your child/ren ages 5 to 12 years. We want kids to have fun as they create, explore, make new friendships, learn to be part of a team, and more!
You CAN sign your child/ren up for both weeks of camp; however, if demand for our camps is too high, we MAY need to rescind registration for ONE of the weeks. We may be able to offer attendance in another adjacent community. We are doing our best to accommodate the needs of all families, essential workers, etc. We thank you for your patience and understanding. At this time, if your child is under 5 years of age but developmentally ready to be part of group activities (including drop-off for a full day), please reach out to us at info@hgrec.com and we will work with families on a case-by-case basis. Demand for these camps is generally high, so we will do our best to accommodate and be as fair to families as we can. We know the respite is needed and we’ll do our best to accommodate within our legal limits.
Please select the preferred week of camp during registration. If registration is full (no tickets available online), to place your child/ren on a waitlist e-mail info@hgrec.com. Due to the high demand for our camps, cancellations without 72hr notice will NOT be refunded, unless the absence is due to medical, including COVID-19 illness or isolation.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT CAMPS THIS SUMMER
In our camps, we combine a weekly theme with fun activities that include sport, art, and getting outside, along with healthy snacks & engaging workshops delivered by local instructors (Camp Specialists). NEW in 2022 – we are committed to reducing our consumption & including more environmental stewardship and sustainability in all we do. Join us as we transition to reducing consumption, getting outside more, supporting active transport, and reduce, reuse, recycle!
We have two themes for in-person camps this year:
- Week 1: Blast from the Past
Campers will stretch their imagination & be transported back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance! Activities at this camp will emphasize using one’s hands to create, upcycle & learn skills essential skills of the medieval era & beyond. From sculpting and paper making, to archery and jousting with pool noodles, calligraphy, art, theatre, and more – you can bet we’ll be spending our summer exchanging ideas, expanding our minds, and enjoying all that life has to offer!
- Week 2: An Eye on the Sky
Learn more about air and space in this camp as we talk about climate, astronomy, & Campers will be given their first taste of space! We will take a “mini trip” to outer space on a hunt for Moon Rocks, and we’ll even sample the food astronauts eat. The focus of this camp includes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) that quench our thirst for knowledge, while including lessons on local climate action & space stewardship. Each day will also include a hearty dose of outdoor play in the fresh air!
